Cubs nation is all in on Christopher Morel: ‘He brings a lot to the fans’
The first couple months of the 2022 season haven’t gone quite like the Cubs hoped but Christopher Morel has been a source of constant sunshine since his promotion in mid-May.
The rookie began his career with a 22-game on-base streak, setting a new franchise record and earning national acclaim.
Between his play on the field, his wholesome personality and his nonstop energy, Morel has wasted no time endearing himself to Cubs fans.
At a Miller Lite Watch Party event at Murphy’s Bleachers Sunday, we asked Cubs fans what Morel has meant to them so far.
“Christopher Morel is one of those guys who plays the game with an unbridled joy,” said Matt. “He plays the game the same way I imagine you or I would if we got a chance to go to Wrigley Field and have that as our workspace every single day.
“There’s nothing that Chicago loves more than a guy who comes out of nowhere and just blows the doors off the place as Christopher Morel has. I don’t think any of us had him on our Top 10, 15, 30 prospects coming into this season. Seeing him come out of nowhere and have the results that he has had has really brought a lot of joy to Cubs fans this season.”
Cubs fan Chris believes Morel reminds him of José Cardenal, an outfielder who played for the Cubs from 1972-77.
Jason and his son Ryne (yes, named after Ryne Sandberg) see the same kind of energy from Morel that Sammy Sosa brought to Wrigley Field when the slugger would routinely engage with the fans in the right field bleachers.
“The enthusiasm, the attitude — he’s a great player to watch and I can’t wait to see him grow as a player,” Jason said.
Joe, a lifelong Cubs fan, is reminded of Sandberg and Shawon Dunston watching Morel play.
“This kid has the drive, the motivation,” Joe said. “He brings the team to life. Watching the game, I wait for him to come up because he’s so exciting. He gets the team motivated. He brings a lot to the fans.”
