Cubs’ Nico Hoerner picks up first career ejection
Nico Hoerner accomplished a first in his MLB career Wednesday evening at Wrigley Field: He was ejected from a game.
In the bottom of the 4th, Hoerner was batting against White Sox starter Erick Fedde. Hoerner took cutters for Strikes 1 and 2 and the 3rd pitch was a sinker well off the plate.
Home plate umpire Vic Carapazza called it a strike and Hoerner reacted strongly, extending his arms out wide and yelling at Carapazza:
Carapazza did not wait long, ejecting Hoerner almost immediately.
“The pitch before I thought was a ball and then the next one was further and both pitches were called strikes,” Hoerner said after the Cubs’ 7-6 walk-off win. “After the last one, I was just honestly genuinely surprised. I think that’s when you saw my arms go up and I think he took exception to that probably more than anything in particular I said.
“But awesome win. That was fun to watch. Wish I could’ve been out there.”
Hoerner said he watched Mike Tauchman’s walk-off home run in the bottom of the 9th down in the Cubs batting cages.
Since he had never been thrown out before, he felt like he was in “uncharted territory” and didn’t enjoy the experience.
Though he did love watching his team win, even if he couldn’t revel in the celebration right away.
“I was by myself, so…” Hoerner deadpanned. “Sometimes those moments when you’re not playing are kind of hard to watch when you can’t do anything about it.
“There were a lot of great at-bats in there. Tauch’s 10-pitch at-bat [in the 7th inning] when the runners advanced and scored. There’s so many moments in a game like that. It was really awesome to watch.”
