Cubs OF Pete Crow-Armstrong creates chaos on basepaths with wacky play

2 weeks agoKyle Millinowisch

Pete Crow-Armstrong might as well stand for Pure Chaos Always.

The 22-year-old speed demon flew around the bases and scored off a line drive single to left field to give the Cubs a 2-0 lead in Tuesday’s Cactus League matchup against the San Diego Padres at Sloan Park.

Crow-Armstrong is never afraid to take the extra base. When Padres left fielder Connor Joe fired the ball towards home plate in an attempt to throw out Dansby Swanson on a 2-out single, there was no doubt Crow-Armstrong was going to test the limits and take second base.

Padres third baseman Eguy Rosario cut the ball off and tried to catch Crow-Armstrong taking the extra base – and in turn fired the ball into center field.

As soon as the ball touched the outfield grass, it was a strong bet to assume Crow-Armstrong was going to round the bases to complete just another play that has become his signature.

This wasn’t the only time Crow-Armstrong made a play that got fans out of their seats this spring training – he did so just last week against the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Crow-Armstrong returned to the Cubs lineup after being a late scratch from Monday’s game due to right hamstring tightness. Manager Craig Counsell told reporters Tuesday the decision to rest the young outfielder Monday was simply precautionary, and that he would have played in the game if it were in the regular season.

Coming into play Tuesday, the projected starting center fielder for the Cubs has had a strong spring training – going 7-for-14 with a home run, 4 RBI and a stolen base in 5 games.

The way Crow-Armstrong cruised around the bases, it sure seems like that right hamstring feels just fine…
