Cubs’ offensive struggles haunt them again in shutout loss to Diamondbacks
The Cubs headed into the All-Star break looking like a team that had broken out of their months-long offensive slump.
It took just two days for those issues to return and haunt them.
The Cubs squandered a golden opportunity in the 5th inning on Saturday night, went 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position and stranded 10 baserunners in their 3-0 loss to the Diamondbacks at Wrigley Field.
Kyle Hendricks was solid through 4.1 innings, inducing weak contact and keeping Arizona off the board. But Arizona’s young, speedy left-handed hitting outfielders showed their thump. Alek Thomas blasted a solo shot into the left field basket and Corbin Carroll followed two batters later with a 2-run blast into right-center field.
The Cubs were quick to respond – Nico Hoerner drew a walk to open the bottom of the frame and Michael Busch followed with a double to left field that was caught up in the ivy, giving the Cubs a pair of runners in scoring position with the meat of their order due up.
As has happened so often over the last two months or so, the Cubs failed to produce with that threat.
Zac Gallen struck out both Seiya Suzuki and Ian Happ and, after Christopher Morel drew a walk to load the bases, Mike Tauchman grounded out to first base to end the inning.
“We gave up 3 tonight, that should put us in a pretty good chance to win,” manager Craig Counsell said.
This season, the Cubs are 28th in batting average with runners in scoring position (.224). Since April 27, when the Cubs began the day a season-high 8 games over .500, the team is last in that category, hitting .204. It’s been their bugaboo and what has prevented them from being able to break games open.
Being shutout was extremely frustrating for the Cubs, especially given how they performed against Arizona’s ace, Gallen. The righty threw a career-high 6 walks against the Cubs, but until that 5th inning, the Cubs offense couldn’t punish him for those mistakes.
“He was around the zone – challenging our ball-strike stuff all night,” Counsell said. “We did a pretty good job of it, but ultimately we needed the next hit to score and didn’t get it.”
Instead, the Cubs fall to 6 games under .500 and 4.5 games out of the Wild Card picture. They’ve also dropped the season series against Arizona, a team that also is in the mix for a Wild Card berth.
“Just unfortunate to drop these two,” Hendricks said. “I think I’ve said it in the past, we’ve had that sense of urgency and it’s been day-to-day. We just seem to hit a stride where we’re playing really good baseball and then – even last two days, we’re still putting together good at-bats, it’s just a couple pitches here and that we’re just getting beat on.
“Just gotta keep trudging away, take it one day at a time, one pitch at a time. That’s where we’ve been. But yeah, just got to play a little better baseball.”
