DALLAS — The Cubs will have a new-look coaching staff in 2025.

The team officially announced Craig Counsell’s major league staff on Monday morning, including six new members.

José Javier was named the team’s first base coach, Quintin Berry is the new third base coach, Casey Jacobson joins as assistant pitching coach, A.J. Lewis as staff assistant and Mark Strittmatter shifts to bullpen coach after being the Cubs’ major league fielding coach in 2024.

The team also named Kevin Poppe as the head strength and conditioning coach and Mark Weisman as assistant strength and conditioning coach.

Javier joins the Cubs from the Yankees, where he served as a defensive coach for their Triple-A affiliate. He had been a coach for the Yankees for 8 years after a 6-year minor league career with New York. Javier takes over for Mike Napoli, who was not brought back after the 2024 season.

Jacobson joins the major league coaching staff after spending the last 2 years as the Cubs’ minor league senior coordinator of pitching development. He replaces Daniel Moskos, who became the Marlins pitching coach this offseason.

Lewis joins Counsell’s coaching staff after a 4-year career in the Rockies minor-league system. He is a Chicago native who signed as a free agent with Colorado in July 2020.

Berry’s addition had been previously reported. He joined from Milwaukee, where he had worked with Counsell for three years as first base coach.

Poppe is entering his third year with the organization and Weisman his fourth. It will be the first year on the major-league staff for both.

The rest of Counsell’s coaching staff is returning in 2025.

Ryan Flaherty is back as Counsell’s bench coach. Tommy Hottovy and Dustin Kelly remain in their roles as pitching coach and hitting coach, respectively. Assistant hitting coaches John Mallee and Juan “Pipi” Cabreja retain their roles on the offensive side.

Major league coaches Jonathan Mota and Alex Smith are back, too, as are bullpen catchers Garrett Lloyd and Erick Castillo.
