Cubs place Nico Hoerner on IL, reinstate Andrelton Simmons

3 years agoStaff Report

Nico Hoerner’s freak injury has resulted in an IL stint.

The team placed the shortstop on the 10-day IL, retroactive to May 12 with a right ankle sprain. In a corresponding move, the team reinstated shortstop Andrelton Simmons from the 10-IL. Simmons started the year on the IL with right shoulder inflammation Simmons played just one Spring Training game due to the injury. Simmons had a 6-game rehab assignment with the Iowa Cubs.

Hoerner suffered the ankle sprain in the 1st inning of Wednesday’s win over the Padres in San Diego. On a Jurickson Profar triple to center, Hoerner moved to center field to get into position for a potential relay. As he ran to the spot, he collided with second base umpire Dan Iassogna. He stayed in for the rest of the half inning, took an at-bat in the 2nd inning and before exiting the game.
