Cubs place rookie pitcher on IL, ending his season
Jordan Wicks’ rookie season has been marred by injury.
The 25-year-old southpaw was placed on the IL Friday with a right oblique strain. That will end his campaign and marks the 3rd separate time he has been on the IL this year.
Trey Wingenter was recalled to take Wicks’ spot on the roster.
Wicks opened the year in the rotation but was placed on the IL in late April with a forearm strain. He missed more than a month and returned for barely a week before suffering a right oblique strain that kept him out of action for 2.5 more months.

That same oblique issue has popped up again and the Cubs have now ended his season prematurely.
Wicks will finish with a 2-4 record, 5.48 ERA and 1.63 WHIP in 46 innings. He surrendered 7 homers over his last 2 starts – last Wednesday against a high-powered Dodgers offense and Tuesday against the A’s.
The Cubs had been rolling with a 6-man rotation once Justin Steele returned on Wednesday. Without Wicks, the team can go back to a 5-man rotation with Steele, Jameson Taillon, Shota Imanaga, Javier Assad and Kyle Hendricks.
If things play out according to plan, that would mean Hendricks would have a pair of starts at Wrigley Field remaining (Saturday and then next weekend).
Hendricks is an impending free agent but the Cubs will return the rest of their rotation options. Steele, Imanaga and Taillon will be locked in while Assad likely secures another spot.
That leaves Wicks, Ben Brown, Hayden Wesneski, Cade Horton and others in the mix for the final rotation spot.
Of course, the Cubs may also opt to add another starting pitcher in the offseason and they could bring back Hendricks for another year.
