Cubs prospect James Triantos tells the unique story of his promotion to Triple-A

The Cubs farm system has a plethora of talent that is waiting and eager for their chances to be called up to the big leagues.
As Cubs prospect James Triantos sat down with Andy Martínez at Cubs Convention for the Cubs Weekly Podcast, he reflected on what it was like to receive the call up to Triple-A.
“We were playing the Mississippi Braves and I was walking off the field after the last game of the series. [Double-A Tennessee manager] Lance [Rymel], I don’t remember exactly what happened, but said something along the lines of, ‘You’re going to have to keep doing it in Triple-A,’ and that’s when I knew,” Triantos said. “We all got back to the locker room and he went to tell ‘Matty’ [Shaw] and Kevin [Alcántara] as well. We all knew within five minutes of each other.
“It was very cool. It was very cool and very exciting. It was nice to get to share that with Matt and Kevin as well and go play with Owen [Caissie] too. That was fun. I had to learn some things and still growing as a player and I think it was really good. I enjoyed myself.”
Last season, Triantos had a slash line of .300/.346/.427 between Double-A and Triple-A.

Because of their impressive numbers in the minors, Triantos, Shaw and Moises Ballesteros all took part of the Futures Game at Globe Life Field during the MLB All-Star week in Arlington, Texas. Triantos and Shaw were part of the Futures game while Ballesteros participated in the MLB Futures Skills Showcase.

For Triantos, it was an experience that he will never forget.
“It was so cool. The stadium was amazing. I knew a couple of guys playing in the games already…watching ‘Balli’ [Ballesteros] in the hitters competition, it was awesome. You get to meet so many cool people and play in that game with the best of the best is really cool,” Triantos said, reflecting on the Futures Game.
Outside of showcasing his skills in the Futures Game, he had the opportunity to listen to advice from one of the best hall of fame hitters in the MLB, Ken Griffey Jr.

“They told me that, ‘you’re chilling for the first couple of innings.’ I think it was the first three innings or the first two at-bats,” Triantos said. “I saw Ken Griffey Jr. in the dugout so I was like, ‘I got some time. I’m going to ask him as many questions as I possibly can.’ So I introduced myself to him and I just asked him, ‘How he was able to be consistent for so long?’…The first thing that he said to me was he was his biggest cheerleader: confidence and the confidence in him 24-7.”
Triantos hopes to take Griffey Jr.’s advice and use it in Triple-A in hopes of making his way to the big leagues.
