Cubs prospect Nelson Velázquez hopes to carry offensive exploits in Puerto Rico
No one has done more to raise their prospect profile than Nelson Velázquez this fall. He turned a hot second half in the minors into a Fall League MVP, an AFL championship with the Mesa Solar Sox and a spot on the Cubs 40-man roster.
And he might not be done.
He and AFL teammate Luis Vázquez will join los Criollos de Caguas in Puerto Rico, even as soon as Nov. 26.

Veláquez made his winter ball debut in the 2019-20 season with Criollos, where he featured in 6 games. Vazquez has played 10 games in two seasons with the team.
Criollos look to repeat as champions of the Liga de Beisbol Profesional Roberto Clemente.
In Mexico, Javier Assad made another pair of scoreless outings last week, bringing his total to 8 scoreless innings this winter. Friday, he threw a clean 7th for his 2nd hold of the season in a Naranjeros 5-3 win. Two days later he locked up his 2nd win of the season after allowing 1 hit in an inning of work, and striking out 1.
Manuel Espinoza made his first appearance for Tomateros de Culiacan Nov. 18, throwing 1.2 innings of relief, allowing no runs on 2 hits and a walk.
Elsewhere, Christopher Morel had a game-tying RBI single Friday (and a sweet bat flip) in the 6th for Águilas Cibaeñas, in a game they would go on to win 4-2.
