‘Bananas’: Cubs pull off another dramatic comeback against White Sox at Wrigley

11 months agoTony Andracki

Tuesday night felt very similar to a movie we’ve seen before.

You might remember that the last Crosstown game played at Wrigley Field (Aug. 16, 2023) was Christopher Morel’s epic walk-off in the bottom of the 9th.

The Cubs didn’t walk off the White Sox Tuesday night, but they did pull off another dramatic comeback – and Morel was at the center of it again.

The Cubs erased a 5-0 deficit and ended up toppling the White Sox 7-6 in front of 38,397 screaming fans.

“That’s what makes these games fun,” said Craig Counsell, who experienced the Crosstown series for the first time. “It’s both sides cheering and both sides trying to drown each other out. So it was a fun atmosphere for sure. It just feels a little bigger and that’s fun.”

The White Sox jumped on Shota Imanaga in the 4th inning with 5 runs (4 unearned) as an error by Morel opened the door.

The Cubs offense struggled to score initially but after a 42-minute rain delay, the bats woke up.

Dansby Swanson doubled home Ian Happ in the 5th inning and in the 6th, Morel hit a 2-run shot and pinch-hitter Patrick Wisdom followed with a 2-run blast of his own.

“Most emotion I’ve showed in a while,” Wisdom said. “Yeah, that was cool. Awesome to get a win. I think that’s the cherry on top is getting a nice win, especially against the White Sox.”

After his big pinch-hit blast, Morel was as excited as anybody.

“I almost gave him a kiss,” a smiling Morel said postgame.

Wisdom has been among the Cubs’ home run leaders in each of the last 3 seasons but his playing time has taken a dip this year. He has mostly been relegated to starts against left-handed pitchers and some pinch-hitting duty but he made the most of his opportunity Tuesday.

“It’s really hard to pinch-hit,” Happ said. “Guys don’t get enough credit for how hard it is to pinch-hit. And even if you’re great at it, coming through 3 out of 10 times, there will be a lot of times you go up there in a pinch-hit situation and you fail.

“H’s done everything the team has asked of him. He’s a professional day in and day out. And that was a phenomenal at-bat to keep going, keep grinding and get a pitch he can handle. Ultimately, he is a very strong human being and got that out of the park.”

After White Sox star Luis Robert – fresh off the IL – put his team ahead again in the top of the 7th with a long home run, the Cubs rallied in 8th. Cody Bellinger walked, Morel reached on an infield single and then Happ doubled them both home to give the Cubs a thrilling victory.

The Cubs have been going through a tough stretch and they let out some steam after Wisdom’s game-tying homer and then again after Happ’s double.

“Bananas,” Wisdom said, describing the scene in the dugout. “Going nuts. There was gum all over the floor and stuff. It was pretty exciting. Same thing with Happ, coming through with that double too – just going nuts. Because I think we all knew that it was coming and just for it to happen, I think we just all kind of let loose, which is fun.”

Jed Hoyer had talked prior to the game about the Cubs’ need for more power and his team responded with a big performance.

“It was a good ballgame – lots of back and forth,” Counsell said. “We had we had some big hits, and we needed some big hits. It was a fun night, really. To score late-inning runs like that makes for a fun game.”
