Cubs recall righty to bolster bullpen, option lefty reliever
The Cubs added some length to their moderately taxed bullpen Sunday morning.
The team recalled right-hander Caleb Kilian from Iowa, optioning lefty Anthony Kay to make room on the active roster.
“In a moment where we’re just a little bit short, we’ve asked a lot out of the bullpen as of late, especially the last two days and then Javi [Assad] taking [Marcus Stroman’s] start. Just gonna need a guy with some length down there.”
The Cubs are a bit short in their bullpen. Assad pitched 3.2 innings for the Cubs on Saturday as they beat the Braves 8-6. In the win, they used six different pitchers, including Michael Fulmer and Julian Merryweather in multi-inning roles.
Hayden Wesneski who was recalled on July 28, pitched 3 innings in relief on Friday afternoon, so the bullpen was low on coverage. Kilian and his ability to cover multiple frames should provide a boost to the Cubs’ bullpen.
Kilian made a spot start for the Cubs in Miami on April 29, allowing 7 runs on 10 hits in 3.1 innings with 2 hit batters. He allowed 5 runs in the 1st inning in the loss. He was optioned the next day.
He’s recovered nicely since.
In his last 6 outings, the righty has a 2.43 ERA and 1.05 WHIP across 37 innings for the I-Cubs.
“He’s thrown the ball really well and deserves to be back,” Ross said.
