Cubs reportedly a ‘team to watch’ in Dylan Cease trade market

2 weeks agoKarli Bell

The Cubs may be adding another arm to their pitching staff with the San Diego Padres reportedly looking to trade Dylan Cease.

The Padres are now facing some payroll restrictions this year compared to 2024, which creates a potential opportunity for trades. MLB Network’s Jon Morosi believes that one spot Cease may land is at Wrigley Field.

“One team to watch is the Chicago Cubs,” Morosi said. “Why the Cubs? They’ve got 7 of the top 100 prospects according to MLB Pipeline with 6 of the 7 most likely making their debuts in the MLB in 2025. Pay extra close attention here.

“The Padres don’t know who’s going to start in left field with Profar leaving to sign with the Braves. For that reason, it’d be tough to justify a one-year deal like Cease – he’s a free agent after 2025 – to give up someone of Owen Caissie’s ability. That’s exactly the kind of player who could make trading Dylan Cease worth the while to the Padres. If Owen Caissie is in this trade, he goes right into a corner outfield spot in San Diego.”

Cease was originally drafted by the Cubs back in 2014 before being traded across town to the White Sox in 2017 as part of the José Quintana deal.

This past season, Cease posted a 3.47 ERA with 224 strikeouts over 189.1 innings. He leads all MLB pitchers with 130 starts since 2021.
