Cubs reportedly closing in on deal with veteran Justin Turner

In the aftermath of missing out on Alex Bregman, the Cubs are apparently pivoting to another veteran corner infielder.
The Cubs were linked to Justin Turner last week and Tuesday morning, the two sides have reportedly agreed to a deal according to ESPN 1000’s David Kaplan:
The Athletic’s Patrick Mooney reported early on Tuesday morning that the two sides were closing in on an agreement and later reported the deal is worth $6 million with Turner:
Turner turned 40 in November and is entering his 17th MLB season. He has a career .285/.363/.458 slash line (.821 OPS) and went to the All-Star Game in 2021 and 2017.
Turner has played in 86 postseason games, including helping the Dodgers win the World Series in 2020.

While he has spent most of his career at third base, he hasn’t appeared at the hot corner much over the last couple of seasons – 6 games in 2024 and 7 in 2023. He most often served as the DH or first baseman for the Blue Jays and Mariners last season.
The Cubs don’t have a backup first baseman and anticipated utility man Jon Berti serving in that role despite limited experience at the position.
Turner can now fill the backup first base role while also serving as a DH and possibly as an option at third base if needed.
Currently, the Cubs have Seiya Suzuki locked in as the everyday DH while Kyle Tucker, Pete Crow-Armstrong and Ian Happ man the outfield.
Jed Hoyer’s front office understands injuries and ineffectiveness will impact the team this season and know they will need depth to get through a 162-game schedule.
Turner fills exactly that, as a veteran right-handed hitter with an advanced approach at the plate (he strikes out well below the league average rate) and some pop. He is also not just a platoon bat as he has a career .821 OPS against both right-handed and left-handed pitchers.
