Cubs rookies dress up for Mario Kart themed road trip

8 months agoTony Andracki

The Cubs clubhouse had good vibes Sunday, coming off a complete team victory over the Diamondbacks to avoid a sweep.

The mood improved even more as the rookies started to get ready for the team bus to the airport.

As the Cubs get set to head to Colorado and Arizona on a week-long road trip, they brought the dress-up theme back for the rookies and other players like Seiya Suzuki (who was not able to dress up during his rookie season in 2022).

The rookies did not know what they would be wearing until after the game, as the Cubs veterans got together as a group to make the decision.

Catcher Miguel Amaya donned a Luigi costume and Javier Assad was dressed as Mario.

Daniel Palencia and Alexander Canario were both Yoshi. Left-handed pitchers Jordan Wicks and Luke Little were each dressed in Toad costumes while Miles Mastrobuoni was tabbed as Wario.

Suzuki was Donkey Kong while his translator, Toy Matsushita, wore a banana costume (and even carried a bundle of bananas!):

Hayden Wesneski was also the cloud, which apparently has a name (who knew?):

“I said it multiple times in Spring Training – this is a fun team to be around, a fun group of guys,” David Ross said Saturday. “They all hung out and did things. So there was a good way about this group early on.

“I think adversity, winning, all the things that come along with this and the guys’ personalities coming out and some of the things that go on after games. That stuff just continued to grow so you could tell how close they get.”
