Cubs slugger Kyle Tucker details his approach and routine in the batter’s box

The newest Chicago Cub knows a thing or two about hitting.
Kyle Tucker posted 23 home runs and 49 RBIs while slugging .585 in 2024 with the Astros.
In an exclusive interview with Jon ‘Boog’ Sciambi, Tucker walked through his approach when he enters the box.
“Zone in, step in, tap the plate. Try and calm yourself down,” Tucker said. “You can get a little too amped up. Find the right kind of aggression while also staying calm and composed. It’s all timing and trying to pick out the zone and not try to get out of that.
“If you go up there with no plan, you’re just trying to hit the ball, anything can happen. If you have a purpose where you’re trying to hit it to right-center, in the stands on a line or wherever, that’s the direction of where your body wants to go. Everything’s synced up together to where if you got everything good, it should be fluid.”

Tucker’s picked up a few things from his own brother, Preston Tucker. Preston was drafted by the Houston Astros in 2012 and made his MLB debut in 2015. In his 3 seasons in the MLB (243 games), Preston put up similar numbers to Kyle’s half-season in 2024: 23 HRs and 68 RBIs (while also slugging .403).
“He’s about 6-and-a-half years older than me so I was always wanting to come to his games and watch him play,” Tucker said. “I always wanted to play at their level, because I thought it was cool. You want to be like your older brother.
“He helped in the sense of just watching him go about his business and how he played. Playing Wiffle ball in the backyard probably also helped. When you’re 10 playing against a high school kid throwing the ball at you, it probably helps.”
