Cubs trade young infielder to Orioles in minor move
The Cubs dealt young infielder Luis Vázquez to the Baltimore Orioles Friday afternoon, the team announced.
In exchange, the Cubs received cash considerations from Baltimore.
Earlier this week, the Cubs designated Vázquez for assignment to clear room on the 40-man roster for veteran infielder Jon Berti.
Vázquez, 25, has been in the Cubs minor league system since 2017. He made his MLB debut in 2024 and appeared in 11 games in the big leagues.
In Triple-A Iowa last season, he hit .263 with a .779 OPS and 8 homers in 64 games.
Vázquez has been known as a strong defender throughout his time with the Cubs and enjoyed a breakout campaign on offense in the minors in 2023 (20 HR, .817 OPS).
But the Cubs have a roster crunch, as their 40-man has been full most of the offseason. Berti has 461 career MLB games under his belt and provides veteran experience to the Cubs bench.

The Cubs also have Rule 5 selection Gage Workman on the big-league roster, traded for infielder/outfielder Vidal Bruján this winter and acquired infielder Ben Cowles from the Yankees in a trade last summer.
All three players are on the 40-man roster and the Cubs also have other infield options available in the minor leagues including Matt Shaw and James Triantos.
