Cubs unveil 2021 minor league coaches, coordinators

3 years agoTony Andracki

As winter weather continues to slam into Chicago, the latest sign that spring is right around the corner came Monday when the Cubs announced the coaches and coordinators for their minor league affiliates.

Marty Pevey will once again manage the Triple-A Iowa club, his 9th season in the position and 13th year in the Cubs organization.

Mark Johnson returns to the manager role with Double-A Tennessee after spending the last couple seasons serving as the Cubs’ minor league catching coordinator – a position he will retain in 2021 in addition to his managerial duties. Johnson has managed at multiple spots throughout the organization, including with the Smokies from 2016-18 and a pair of title runs with Single-A Myrtle Beach (2015) and Single-A Kane County (2014).

Michael Ryan will serve as the South Bend Cubs manager after joining the organization last year from the Pirates minor league system.

Buddy Bailey will manage Single-A Myrtle Beach, his 33rd season as a minor league manager. He was the skipper for South Bend in 2019 and Myrtle Beach from 2016-18.

The Cubs have consolidated their Rookie League teams in Arizona down to one squad, but they still have enough staff to handle the approximately 60 players expected to be on the roster. Lance Rymel will manage there after serving as the short-season Class-A manager in Eugene the last couple years.

The Cubs return their pitching infrastructure in 2021 with Casey Jacobson (pitching development) and James Ogden (pitching performance) beginning their second season with the organization.
