David Ross on the benefits of having the universal DH in his lineup this season

4 years agoStaff Report

Cubs manager David Ross joined Len Kasper and Jim Deshaies on Cubs 360 Summer Camp to discuss how beneficial the universal DH is going to be this season.

One of the new rules for the 2020 season is the designated hitter coming to the National League and Ross is all in on the new rule.

“That’s a nice bonus from my seat and letting that starting pitcher, especially in this unique situation, roll a little longer when they’re spot doesn’t come up. That helps me out a lot and makes that decision of double switching and moving guys around and we don’t have to worry about that,” Ross said. “I can just let my eyeballs tell me what’s going on, get the feedback from the players and the coaches and make the moves I need to make.”

Kasper joked about calling David Ortiz as a designated hitter. Though Big Papi is retired, Ross knows he has a great group of players to fill that role.

“We’ve got a good list of guys in the DH role. Obviously a lot of talk has been on Schwarber and what he can do. Victor Caratini gives us a really good at bat. Albert Almora Jr. was having a good spring,” Ross said. “We’ve got a list of guys we can move around in that DH spot. Willson Contreras and Vic are a big one when we want to give Willson a rest, we can give him a DH spot and let Victor catch.”
