Dodgers star Mookie Betts won’t play vs. Cubs in Tokyo Series

1 month agoTony Andracki

The Dodgers will be without one of their best players in the Tokyo Series.

Mookie Betts will miss the 2-game set due to illness, manager Dave Roberts announced Sunday evening.

The Cubs are set to face off against the Dodgers at 5 a.m. CT Tuesday morning as Shota Imanaga gets the ball for the North Siders.

That will make things a bit less daunting for Imanaga, who was initially set to face Shohei Ohtani, Betts and Freddie Freeman to begin the 2025 season.

Betts missed nearly 50 games last year due to injury but still wound up with 19 homers, 75 RBI and 75 runs scored with an .863 OPS.

He has been an All-Star in every full season since 2015 and he has earned MVP votes in 9 of the last 10 years, including taking home the award in the AL in 2018.

Simply put: He is on a Hall of Fame trajectory.

The Dodgers are still expected to have a strong lineup led by Ohtani, Freeman, Teoscar Hernández and others, but missing out on a perennial All-Star and MVP candidate will be a welcome path for Imanaga and Game 2 starter Justin Steele.

The Dodgers led MLB in team OPS last season and finished 2nd in runs scored and on-base percentage en route to a 98-win regular season and a World Series championship.

The Cubs, meanwhile, have finished with exactly 83 wins in each of the last 2 seasons. They were aggressive this offseason, adding star right fielder Kyle Tucker as well as veteran relievers Ryan Pressly, Ryan Brasier and Caleb Thielbar.

The Cubs have been in Tokyo since last week and split a pair of exhibition games against the Hanshin Tigers and the Yomiuri Giants. They beat the Giants 4-2 early Sunday morning (Chicago time) behind a 2-run single from Matt Shaw and 4 shutout innings in relief from veteran Matt Boyd.
