Gage Workman goes from White Sox to Tigers in yet another roster move

8 months agoTony Andracki

Gage Workman is racking up the mileage.

In the last three weeks, the rookie infielder has been:

— Designated for assignment by the Chicago Cubs (April 23)
— Traded to the Chicago White Sox (April 26)
— Placed on the 10-day IL (May 1)
— Sent on a rehab assignment (May 9)
— Designated for assignment again, this time by the White Sox (May 12)
— Returned to the Detroit Tigers and assigned to the Toledo Mud Hens (the Tigers’ Triple-A affiliate)

The final move came Wednesday to sort of close the loop on Workman’s wild run:

The Cubs selected Workman in the Rule 5 Draft in December and had to keep him on their 26-man roster or offer him back to the Tigers. He had a strong spring training, which made it an easy choice for the Cubs.

The 25-year-old made his MLB debut in the fifth game of the season, striking out in two at-bats.

All told, he played just nine games with the Cubs, going 3-for-14 with a double, two RBI and a stolen base. He was ultimately DFA’d because of some defensive woes, as he committed three errors over his final nine defensive chances at third base.

“There’s some development in the position, in the roster spot,” manager Craig Counsell said in late April after the Cubs parted ways with Workman. “And we just didn’t feel like we could properly allocate the time to that and the playing time to that. And that puts Gage in a tough spot as well, so we made a move.”

Shortly after the trade to the South Side, Workman delivered a fiery message to his former team, saying: “Now I want to beat the Cubs.”

Workman, however, didn’t last with the White Sox long enough to play in the Crosstown Series, which begins Friday at Wrigley Field.
