How a conversation between Paul Skenes and Shota Imanaga led to the Cubs’ no-hitter
While Paul Skenes set the baseball world ablaze during the 2024 season, it was fellow rookie Shota Imanaga that stole the show at the All MLB Awards this week.
Imanaga belted out “Go Cubs Go” alongside World Series hero Dexter Fowler but before the karaoke bit, a great anecdote was revealed on the red carpet.
Skenes mentioned that Imanaga came up to him during the season and asked the Pirates flamethrower for a tip.
“I regret this one a little bit,” Skenes said. “Shota came up to me and asked me how I held my fastball, not my sinker. So I was like, ‘here you go dude, check it out.’
“Then he no-hit us his next outing.”

Imanaga spun 7 no-hit innings against the Pirates on Sept. 4 at Wrigley Field, striking out 7 and walking 2. He gave way to Nate Pearson and Porter Hodge to close out the historic outing.
“Looking back, the reason I had a good game was maybe that talk we had,” Imanaga said through interpreter Edwin Stanberry.
That outing was the highlight of Imanaga’s stellar rookie campaign, in which he was named to the All-MLB 2nd Team this week.
He went 15-3 with a 2.91 ERA, 1.02 WHIP and 174 strikeouts in 173.1 innings.
Skenes, meanwhile, had his fair share of success during his own rookie season. He went 11-3 with a 1.96 ERA and a whopping 170 strikeouts in 133 innings.
Comparatively speaking, the Cubs actually fared well against Skenes, as he had only a 2.25 ERA against the North Siders in 4 starts.
