How Cubs rookie Shota Imanaga is trying to stay fresh as season winds down

7 months agoAndy Martinez

When Shota Imanaga began his MLB career with the Cubs, there were plenty of question surrounding him.

How would his skillset transfer over?

Could he adjust to pitching multiple days a week in a 5-man rotation?

What would the acclimation process be like for him?

So far, he’s checked every box with ease. He was an All-Star in his rookie campaign, he’s made 17 starts on 4 or 5-days rest and he’s been a hit with fans since his introductory press conference.

But one question — fairly — is arising: how is he feeling as he nears the finish line on his first big-league campaign?

“In terms of today, my body felt a little heavier, it wasn’t moving as well as I wanted to, but in terms of comparing it to last year, my body feels good,” Imanaga said through interpreter Edwin Stanberry. “I don’t have any pain anywhere, nothing hurts. So, I think my goal is to try to do the best I can, depending on how I feel that day and then go on from there.”

Imanaga hasn’t quite put up the dazzling numbers he did to open the year when he carried a 0.84 ERA through 9 starts, but he’s still been an incredibly steady presence in the Cubs’ rotation. He has a solid 3.47 ERA in 36.1 innings since the All-Star break

The hope for Imanaga will be he can close out over the final month-and-a-half of the season. Then, the only question Imanaga would have would be how he can build off this season, going into 2025.

“Watching the position players, they get ready every single day,” Imanaga said. “As a starting pitcher, I throw once every five, six days. So just seeing the position guys, they’re going out there every single day, they’re not complaining, so I can’t either.

“I’m just gonna try my best and continue to go out there.”
