How the ‘Shawon-O-Meter’ brought luck to the Cubs Hall of Famer

When a player is struggling at the plate, they’ll look for just about anything to snap them out of the slump, and that’s how Cubs Hall of Famer Shawon Dunston saw the infamous ‘Shawon-O-Meter.’
“I love it. I appreciate it. It made me popular but it first started in the middle or towards the end of May. I was hitting .177,” Dunston said on the Cubs Weekly Podcast. “I come to the parking lot, and a man had a sign that said 177 and I didn’t think it was so funny. He goes ‘Well, you sign it Shawon, it’ll give you good luck.’ When you’re hitting .177, you look for luck.
“So I signed it, he said it was going to give me good luck and ever since then, my average went up. Then the guys would say ‘Shawon, they have your average up there.’ I said, ‘It’s not funny,’ and it kept moving up, moving up. Then I got popular so I enjoyed it.”
