Ian Happ reveals emotions of 1,000th MLB career game, lauds Cubs fans
Ian Happ played in his 1,000th career game with the Chicago Cubs on Saturday, becoming the 21st player in franchise history to do so.
When the Cubs left fielder stepped into the batter’s box in the bottom of the first inning, he was greeted with a loud standing ovation and a large congratulatory display on the video board. Happ reflected on the love he received from the Wrigley Field crowd on “The Compound,” where he disclosed the standing ovation was the first in his career.
Although Happ was able to relish in the special moment, he typically doesn’t like being under the bright lights.
“What the weird thing is about the standing-o thing is that … I don’t like when things are about me,” Happ said. “It felt like a very long time when it was happening, and when I watched the video after, it seemed really quick.”
Former Cubs minor leaguer Dakota Mekkes, Happ’s co-host on the podcast, referenced the Marquee Sports Network broadcast in telling his former teammate that he’s one of just four Cubs players with three-plus Gold Gloves and 150-plus home runs. The other three Cubs to achieve are Ron Santo, Ryne Sandberg and Anthony Rizzo.
“They showed that graphic, and I was like, ‘That’s a pretty sick list to be a part of.’ Those are three all-time great Chicago Cubs, soon to be four,” Mekkes said.
Happ recognized the rarity of being able to play so many games with one team: “I’ve been really lucky to be here, to be a Cub.”
Happ, Mekkes and Tom Prizeman continued to discuss the historic day on “The Compound,” including a near-home run in the Cubs star’s first at-bat, the incredible diving catch he made and the journey he took to get settled in his position in left field. While reflecting on the latter, Happ took the time to recognize a special group of fans.
“The left field fans, they mean a lot to me,” Happ said, “I get emotional every Opening Day going out there and tipping my hat to them.”
Happ’s celebration didn’t end with the Cubs’ 7-1 win over the San Diego Padres, as he was met with a surprise party with the whole team at a local bar. Happ had no idea it was coming.
“I might be the most oblivious person on the planet.” Happ said.
Episodes of “The Compound” air every Thursday live on Marquee Sports Network and streaming on the Marquee Sports Network app.
