‘I’m just happy’: Aramis Ramírez thrilled to be inducted into Cubs Hall of Fame
When talking about Cubs all-time great third basemen, the conversation would be incomplete without mention of Aramis Ramírez.
Ramírez spent 9 seasons with the Cubs playing in 1,124 games and hitting 239 home runs. He will be honored this Sunday for all his contributions as he is inducted into the Cubs Hall of Fame alongside his former teammate, Kerry Wood.
“I played here for 9 years, giving my best, tried to play through injury and everything so I guess I’m rewarded now. I’m just happy,” said Ramírez on Cubs Live! Friday.
Ramírez was dependable and his 806 RBIs, which ranks 12th all time with the Cubs, show it.
“That was part of my job I took pride in,” Ramírez said when asked by Cole Wright what it meant to him to drive runners in and keep his team in the ballgame. “I thought that was part of my job, you know. I was a middle of the order-type of guy.”
Not only was Ramírez a great hitter but he was also a leader and example who often gave advice to young players as a veteran. Especially during the 2007 and 2008 seasons which saw the Cubs in the postseason in back-to-back years.
“I took the pressure off myself and put it on the pitcher. Even when I was a veteran, I told young guys, ‘Don’t put pressure on yourself, he’s the one in trouble. Just take a deep breath and stay with your gameplan,” Ramírez said, explaining where his mentality at the plate comes from.
On top of his bat and his leadership, Ramírez’s preparation was second to none.
When Girardi asked about his preparation, Ramírez explained how on every road trip he would tell the video team how he needed a portable DVD player and film on every pitcher he was expected to face in an upcoming series, including potential call-ups from minor league pitchers.
For all the time and effort Ramírez dedicated to the game, he will receive his well-deserved recognition on Sunday when he is honored by the Cubs as a member of their Hall of Fame.
