Imagining the impact Sammy Sosa’s presence will have on fans at Cubs Convention, Wrigley Field

1 month agoStaff Report

The Ricketts family extended an invitation to Sammy Sosa to attend and participate in the 2025 Cubs Convention, marking what could be the first time Cubs fans can show their gratitude to the former slugger.

“Finally, fans will be able to show just how much they appreciated Sammy Sosa even though this hasn’t been something that they can tangibly do throughout the years until maybe now,” Elise Menaker said on Cubs 360 presented by Circa. “There will be a lot of moments now where fans can finally say just how much they loved watching Sammy play, and hopefully the Cubs Convention is the first time. That would just be a roar.”

Not only could this be a homecoming for the fans but also for a few media members, like Bruce Levine, who had the fortune of covering Sosa during his hey day in Chicago.

“For the media people that covered Sammy Sosa, he was a joy to deal with,” Levine said on Cubs 360. “He was always available, always had some commentary, never turned people down and was always available to the fans. For that, I just appreciate his career so much.”

Now whether or not Sosa attends Cubs Convention is still to be seen, but the invitation is out there, garnering hope for Cubs fans to show their love for “Slammin’ Sammy.”

This also opens the door for Sosa to potentially return to Wrigley Field at some point in 2025 or beyond as a guest of the Cubs. The record-setting slugger and the franchise have had a fractured relationship since his time on the North Side but Thursday marked a huge step toward a reunion.

“I’m just excited for Cubs fans and for Sammy,” Levine said. “They loved each other, they still love each other and that can be expressed at the Cubs Convention thanks to the statement by Tom Ricketts and his family moving forward. He is being embraced and slowly brought back.”

The 2025 Cubs Convention is slotted for January 17-19 at the Sheraton Grand Hotel in Chicago.
