In stunning move, Cubs part ways with veteran reliever Héctor Neris
The Cubs are parting ways with veteran reliever Héctor Neris.
Neris, 35, was signed to a 1-year, $9 million deal in the offseason as the Cubs’ main addition to the bullpen. He had a team option for 2025 that would turn into a player option depending on appearances or games finished.
The Cubs opted to designated the veteran for assignment and he has cleared waivers, so he is now a free agent. The team announced the deal Tuesday afternoon.
On the season, Neris was 8-4 with a 3.89 ERA and 1.52 WHIP. He has been serving as the Cubs’ closer over the last few months and leads the team with 17 saves in 22 chances.

He blew a save Friday by allowing 3 runs on 4 hits in an inning of work.
But even with that outing, he has been pitching well of late with a 2.60 ERA in his last 18 games dating back to June 22.
It’s a bit of a stunning move given Neris’ overall body of work and also including the fact the Cubs have boasted the best bullpen in baseball over the last two months.
Right-hander Jack Neely will take Neris’ place on the roster. The Cubs acquired Neely from the Yankees in the Mark Leiter Jr. trade last month.
Neely, 24, has not allowed a run in 6 outings with the Cubs in Triple-A Iowa.
He has racked up a whopping 13 strikeouts against only 1 walk in 6.2 innings after boasting a 14.8 K/9 ratio with the Yankees’ Triple-A club earlier this season.
