Jason Kipnis officially signs with hometown Cubs, realizing childhood dream

4 years agoAndy Martinez

Jason Kipnis walked into Wrigley Field this July and admittedly had no idea where to go.

“I was lost,” Kipnis said. “I was walking down hallways and almost had to wait for someone to come grab my hand and be like, ‘you need to go this way.’”

He eventually figured out where he needed to be in the stadium to take his first workout at the Friendly Confines.

Now, he’ll have even more time to learn all the ins and outs of Wrigley Field. The Cubs officially selected the contract of the veteran second baseman on Thursday. It was the first major goal in Kipnis’ goal to play for his childhood team, even if it came a little later than he anticipated.

“When I signed in the offseason, I knew a spot wasn’t just going to be handed to me it was gonna be something I had to work for,” Kipnis said. “I didn’t think it was gonna come on July 17, but here we are and I’m happy as I would’ve been on April 1 or whenever it would’ve been … I’m excited.”

Kipnis, who holds a career .750 OPS, gives David Ross and the Cubs stronger depth at second base. Rookie Nico Hoerner and Kipnis are expected to battle for the everyday second base position, with David Bote, Daniel Descalso and Hernán Pérez having the ability to fill in if needed.

“We’ve got a really good competition,” Ross said. “The guys have been having quality ABs, but it’s nice to go ahead and add Kipnis today and knowing he’s gonna help us when this season starts.”
