Philadelphia Phillies closer José Alvarado has been banned for 80 games after testing positive for a performance-enhancing substance, MLB announced in a press release Sunday.

Alvarado was using exogenous testosterone, which violates MLB’s Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment Program. He can return for the remainder of the regular season but will miss any playoff games should the Phillies make the postseason.

Alvarado’s suspension is the second in MLB this season after Atlanta Braves outfielder Jurickson Profar tested positive for Chorionic Gonadotropin (hCG) in March.

In a brief statement, the Phillies said they fully support MLB’s decision and are “disappointed to hear today’s news.”

Alvarado, 29, is 4-1 with a 2.70 ERA and seven saves over 20 innings pitched as the Phillies’ closer this season. On April 27, he pitched a scoreless ninth inning at Wrigley Field and ultimately earned the win when Philadelphia beat the Cubs 3-1 in extra innings.

The Phillies took two of three games at Wrigley this season, and they will host the Cubs in early June without Alvarado.

Alvarado has been instrumental in the Phillies’ bullpen, which ranks 24th in MLB with a 4.66 ERA. The team is 1.5 games out of first place in the NL East and holds the second Wild Card spot as it stands, only a half-game behind the San Diego Padres.

This is a move that significantly weakens one of the top teams in the NL.

The Cubs are looking to make a playoff appearance for the first time since 2020, when they were swept by the Miami Marlins in the Wild Card Series. If they hold onto first place in the NL Central, there is a possibility that they could see Philadelphia in the postseason — only they would not have to face Alvarado.

Alvarado originally signed with the Tampa Bay Rays as a free agent from Venezuela in 2012. He was traded to Philadelphia on Dec. 29, 2020, in a three-team deal that sent current Rays pitcher Garrett Cleavinger to the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Since making his debut with Philadelphia in 2021, Alvarado has recorded 37 saves over 229.2 innings with 301 strikeouts and a 3.37 ERA.
