Watch Justin Steele’s son, Beau, steal show after dad’s stellar outing
The Chicago Cubs found a way to get back in the win column with a 7-0 rout of the Texas Rangers on a cold Monday night at Wrigley Field.
Cubs left-hander Justin Steele was the star, as he threw seven shutout innings, but his son, Beau, stole the postgame press conference in an entertaining moment.
Beau sat with his father at the podium and made his presence known. He played with dinosaur toys and some handwarmers, much to the media’s delight, and occasionally interrupted his dad with prehistoric creature sounds.
Reporters tried to solicit a quote from Beau, but at first, he wouldn’t bite. Instead, he let his dad do the talking.
Beau eventually did cave, though, and gave one quote at the end of the press conference.
“Thank you,” he said, eliciting a hearty laugh from everyone, including his ace father.
While Beau “stayed up late” to watch his dad pitch, Justin Steele did his best to stay warm.
“I just had a lot of layers underneath the jersey. I was doing what I could in between innings to stay warm,” said Steele, who gave up just three hits and two walks and struck out eight. “I felt really good tonight. I was filling up the zone, and that was kind of the plan with the conditions tonight. When it’s really windy like this, really cold, it’s a tough day to hit, so if anything today, I was going to make sure I was filling up the zone.”

Steele easily had his best start of the season, joining Matthew Boyd and Shota Imanaga as Cubs starters who have dealt early this season. Boyd hasn’t given up an earned run in two starts and has 10 strikeouts. Imanaga has picked up where he left off last season, going 2-0 with a 0.98 ERA in three starts.
Steele hopes to carry the momentum from his Monday night performance throughout the rest of the season.
