Kris Bryant, Steven Souza Jr. inch closer to return to Cubs lineup

4 years agoAndy Martinez

Kris Bryant spent Saturday doing hitting drills at Wrigley Field. While his return to the Cubs’ lineup is still unknown, his weekend work is just another step in his rehab process on his way back from a wrist injury.

“He’s day-to-day, really,” David Ross said of Bryant prior to Saturday’s doubleheader. “Today he has a lighter day at Wrigley where he’ll take some swings and every day, we’re kind of adjusting or kinda listening to him and seeing how things are going.”

Bryant took 5 at-bats on Friday in South Bend along with Steven Souza Jr., who is also working back from a hamstring injury. The two veterans are splitting their time between Chicago and South Bend as they build up to a  return to the Cubs offense.

Both are eligible to return to the Cubs since their 10-day stints on the injured list are up, but that doesn’t mean they’ll be back immediately. The important thing is having them return when they’re as close to 100-percent as possible and not  rush them back.

“[Bryant’s] on the right path,” Ross said.  “[We’ll] continue to try and get him at-bats as much as we can until he feels like he’s ready to come off, or we all feel like he’s ready to come off.”
