Kyle Hendricks, Jordan Wicks and the uncertainty over Cubs’ rotation plans
Jordan Wicks was scheduled to make another rehab outing with the Iowa Cubs on Friday night.
He ended up being scratched from the start as the Cubs rethink some of their pitching plans at the major-league level.
“I think there’s a scenario where Jordan starts this weekend here, so we’ll just kind of play it out a couple days to see what happens,” manager Craig Counsell told reporters before the Cubs 7-6 win over the Nationals on Friday night. “We want to just keep that option available.”

The Cubs’ entire pitching situation is in a bit of a sticky situation.
Friday night, they played with a short bullpen and the short performance of Kyle Hendricks on Wednesday in Pittsburgh didn’t help, either.
Hendricks lasted just 1.2 innings in the shortest start of his career. It was a low point in an incredibly difficult season, where he’s posted a 6.75 ERA and 1.53 WHIP in 24 games (19 starts) this season.
“We had a third out to get out of that [2nd] inning [on Wednesday],” Counsell said. “That obviously changes the nature of the game. We also got to get hitters out, just in general. I mean, he didn’t have a good outing. And we just move on and try to be better the next time.”
That’s where someone like Wicks — who has been on the IL since June 15 with a right oblique strain — comes into play.
The Cubs could start Wicks on Sunday — when the rosters expand to 28 and they get an extra hitter and pitcher. That would push back Jameson Taillon to Monday against Pittsburgh, a favorable matchup after pitching 6.2 innings against them last Monday and push the rest of the rotation back a day.
Or the Cubs can opt to start Wicks in the finale in Washington, push Taillon back a day and then either skip Hendricks’ turn in the rotation or move him in the bullpen to provide some cover where they’re thin.
“I think where we’re at today is we have a little uncertainty with who’s exactly going to pitch which day,” Counsell said. “We’re going to just kind of leave it like that for now. That puts Kyle in some uncertainty right now. And so that’s where we’ll kind of be until we just play the game and then make a decision when we have to.”
