Kyle Hendricks mic’d up for Alfonso Rivas’ homer creates a classic moment

2 years agoTony Andracki

When Kyle Hendricks joined the Marquee Sports Network broadcast in the top of the 3rd inning, we knew there would be a good conversation with one of the most thoughtful players in the big leagues.

But nobody could’ve predicted a moment that will go down as an instant classic.

As Alfonso Rivas stepped to the plate with 2 outs, Boog Sciambi asked Hendricks his thoughts about the rookie first baseman.

A few pitches later, Rivas smacked a game-tying 2-run homer to center field and Hendricks let loose with about as much emotion as we’ve ever seen from him:

Hendricks, Sciambi and Rick Sutcliffe all exclaimed in unison as Rivas’ ball snuck over the center field wall.

“Keep me on here,” Hendricks said. “Let’s score some runs. There we go.”

Then Sutcliffe teed up Hendricks for the play-by-play call:

“Look at that — get a heater up in the zone,” Hendricks said before pausing and laughing, “I didn’t even see what the pitch was. You just needed my analysis on his swing. That was it.”

Before the homer, here’s how Hendricks analyzed Rivas:

“He’s just a baseball player,” Hendricks said. “That’s who he is — just a ballplayer. I think his demeanor and his personality, exactly what you see is how he plays. He’s never out of control. Keeps his emotions to himself but just puts together a solid at-bat. He has such good hands up there. Lets his hands work for him and you see that over at first, making all the plays. He makes it look really easy, to be honest with you.”

The entire interview with Hendricks was pretty good, ranging from insight on his gem in Monday night’s victory to Ian Happ’s successful 2022 campaign.
