Cubs’ Kyle Tucker shares positive outlook after finger injury, exiting game
CHICAGO — Cubs fans collectively held their breath after Kyle Tucker exited Sunday’s series finale against the Cincinnati Reds after the fourth inning with a jammed right ring finger .
Just a few hours later, the messaging from the star right fielder and Cubs manager Craig Counsell had fans breathing a sigh of relief.
“I feel all right,” Tucker said after the Cubs’ 7-3 win over the Reds at Wrigley Field. “Hands a little jammed, a little swollen. Obviously, we got our off day tomorrow, so hopefully it feels a little better once we get to Washington.”
Tucker suffered the injury in the first inning. He was hit by a pitch on his toe by Reds right-hander Nick Martinez, and later attempted to steal second base, but catcher Tyler Stephenson threw him out. Tucker awkwardly slid into the base, with his right hand being caught underneath him and his helmet falling off, producing a cut on the bridge of his nose.
X-rays on Tucker’s finger larer came back negative.
“Just day-to-day. Not too concerned,” Counsell said. “He felt all right at first, obviously enough to take a couple more at-bats.”
Tucker stayed in the game, and he doubled and scored in the third inning. He popped out to end the fourth before being lifted for Vidal Bruján.
“It’s just a sprained finger, and as soon as some of the swelling goes down — I mean, he took the second at-bat, and it just was a little uncomfortable,” Counsell added. “So, with the lead, just got him out.”
Tucker has been one of the Cubs’ key offensive cogs, hitting .284 with 12 home runs, 39 RBI and a .918 OPS. He was acquired in a blockbuster offseason trade from the Houston Astros for a package that included third baseman Isaac Paredes, 2024 first-round draft pick Cam Smith and right-hander Hayden Wesneski.
The 28-year-old was limited to just 78 games last season with the Astros after he suffered a right shin fracture.
