Kyle Tucker found out about trade to Cubs while standing up in a wedding

4 weeks agoTony Andracki

Any time an MLB player is traded for the first time in their career, it can be a whirlwind.

That’s especially true when you’re standing up in a wedding at the time of the trade.

That’s how last Friday the 13th went for Kyle Tucker.

He was serving as a groomsman in the wedding of his former teammate Myles Straw when he found out that he was being dealt to the Cubs.

“I was at the wedding so I was trying to deal with doing all the groomsmen stuff and getting prepared for their wedding while also trying to field some calls and whatnot on that day,” Tucker said. “So kind of funny how that was all working out.

“But obviously ended up on the Cubs now and I’m excited to start my career with them.”

Leading up to Friday, Tucker had a bit of an idea that a trade was potentially coming, so it wasn’t a complete surprise.

After all, Tucker’s name was in trade rumors all week and often connected to the Cubs in that same span.

“I’d see some of the trade rumors on the internet and whatnot – for however real they are,” Tucker said. “So I kind of knew it was somewhat of a possibility. You just never know if it’s actually going to happen or not in baseball or in any sport until it’s actually done.”

Tucker has spent time in Chicago playing against the White Sox throughout his career but April 2024 was the first time he played against the Cubs at Wrigley Field.

It was a good preview for him of what to expect with his new team.

“Just being in the city and everything is pretty cool,” Tucker said. “It’s pretty special. And especially on the North Side with the Cubs – I played against them for the first time in the big leagues last year and it was a pretty cool experience to be at Wrigley Field and be in front of the fans. You can see how lively it is there.

“…I know Cubs fans from just watching their games and also playing against them this past year, how they are so excited about the Cubs and they’re super into baseball. So I’m hoping it will be a pretty easy transition.”
