Kyle Tucker on possible extension talks with Cubs: ‘I’m open to anything’

1 year agoTony Andracki

The Cubs have landed a star, swinging big for a Kyle Tucker trade.

It’s arguably the biggest deal for the team since the 2015-17 era as Tucker is one of the 10 best players in baseball and could be an MVP candidate in 2025.

But the big question surrounding this move: Will Tucker be in Chicago for longer than a year?

The star outfielder will become a free agent after the 2025 season.

Would he be open to extension talks with the Cubs before hitting the open market?

“I’m open to anything, whether that’s now or later,” Tucker said in his introductory press conference Tuesday afternoon. “See how it goes. In terms of contracts or anything, as long as I go out and do my job when I’m on the field, that stuff will just take care of itself.

“My job’s not to worry about all that. It’s to go out there, perform, put up numbers, try to win games and get to the playoffs and World Series. … If you have the numbers, you can deal with the rest. I’m open to anything and everything. I feel like there’s no harm in listening and seeing where it goes.”

Tucker has played in Chicago against the White Sox several times throughout his career but last spring was the first time he got a chance to play at Wrigley Field.

The Cubs know the magic of Wrigley Field, the history of the franchise and the passion of the fanbase can serve as valuable recruiting tools and Tucker understands the allure as well.

“I’m always open for talks and negotiations and see where that leads,” Tucker said. “Chicago’s a great city to play in – a great city just in general. So I’m open for anything.”
