Matt Mervis’ torrid stretch was rewarded Sunday afternoon when he was named the organization’s minor league player of the month. Double-A righty Walker Powell was named the organization’s minor league pitcher of the month.

Mervis, aptly dubbed “Mash” Mervis, did just that in August. He hit .305 with 7 doubles, 4 home runs and 10 RBI in 24 games at Triple-A Iowa. And Mervis celebrated the news with a big Sunday. He was 2-for-3 with his 30th home run of the season and a game-tying 2-RBI single in the 9th against Columbus.

Mervis, the 12th-ranked prospect on Lance Brozdowski’s Top 25 Cubs Prospects, posted a .390 on-base percentage in the month and a .926 OPS across 24 games. He’s currently on a 13-game hitting streak that began on August 18.

Mervis has had a terrific 2022, hitting .316 with 106 RBI across 3 minor league levels this season. He’s hit 9 home runs and posted a whopping 1.011 OPS in 131 at-bats with Iowa.

Powell, 26, posted a 0.44 ERA across 5 outings for Double-A Tennessee. He struck out 21 with a 0.79 WHIP in 20.1 IP. He pitched 6 scoreless innings on August 26 in a win over Rocket City. He has pitched at three levels this year and has posted a 2.76 ERA with 87 strikeouts in 30 games.

Powell was signed as a non-drafted free agent in 2021.
