Matt Shaw returning to Cubs after Triple-A Iowa stint
Matt Shaw is returning to the Chicago Cubs, in a move that general manager Carter Hawkins teased Sunday afternoon.
The Cubs designated veteran infielder Nicky Lopez for assignment as a corresponding move.
MLB insider Jon Heyman first reported the move Monday morning before the Cubs’ series with the Marlins in Miami.
Shaw initially was in the Triple-A Iowa Cubs’ lineup Sunday, but he was removed before the start of the game.
Hawkins joined “Cubs Live!” on Marquee Sports Network that day and said Shaw would be back in the big leagues “sooner than later.”

The 23-year-old infielder is the Cubs’ consensus top prospect, and he made the big-league club out of spring training. He hit just .172 with a .535 OPS in 18 MLB games, though, and was sent down to the minors with a development plan in place.
“He went back down to work on some adjustments, trying to tone himself down a little bit, get on time a little bit more effectively, and we’ve seen that over the last few games,” Hawkins said. “The results have been pretty obvious — four home runs in the last three games. We’re encouraged, and hopefully he’ll be able to help us out here soon.”
Shaw performed well in Triple-A, with a .286/.409/.560 slash line (.970 OPS), six homers and 14 RBI in 24 games.

Shaw has been on fire lately with five homers, seven RBI and a .923 slugging percentage over the last week. He had back-to-back multi-homer games Thursday and Friday.
The Cubs’ lineup has been stellar this season, but they have a clear hole at third base. The veteran trio of Lopez, Jon Berti and Vidal Bruján has struggled offensively, and Cubs third basemen also have committed some key errors since Shaw’s demotion.
Lopez hit .056 with a .283 OPS in 14 games for the Cubs, making five starts and nine appearances as a pinch-hitter or defensive replacement.
