‘Missile’: Cubs teammates react to Seiya Suzuki’s impressive display of power

1 month agoAndy Martinez

No one might have had a better vantage point of the hardest-hit home run in Seiya Suzuki’s major league career than Cody Bellinger.

“Shoooo,” Bellinger said, aweing at the swing as he recalled it. “Missile … 115[-mph] off the bat is just truly special.

“It’s really hard to do that.”

Suzuki connected perfectly on a 2-0, 91.6 mph sinker about belt high and roped a liner 115 mph into the basket in left-center field for his first homer of the season.

“Certainly, Seiya’s ball, that’s as hard as I’ve seen a baseball hit,” manager Craig Counsell said. “That was really impressive.”

It was hit at a 16-degree launch angle, an incline not usually associated with a long ball. But it was hit so hard that it stayed on a near-gravity defying course out of the park for a 2-0 Cubs lead.

“That’s special kind of power,” first baseman Garrett Cooper said.

The Cubs right fielder is looking to continue his strong end to the 2023 season. In 24 plate appearances this season, Suzuki is hitting .273/.333/.455 with a 109 wRC+. He was one of the best hitters in baseball over the last two months last year and the hope is that he can continue to be that type of force in the middle of the Cubs lineup this season.

“I think that it would be tremendous,” Bellinger said. “But, it’s an extremely hard game and every single day, [he’s] gonna get up and try and do the best that he can.”

If he’s hitting 115-mph liners, it’s going to be a tough going for opposing pitchers.

“Obviously they’re really good players and thanks to God they’re having good at-bats,” Tuesday’s starter Javier Assad said. “I’m happy to have them on my side.”
