Sammy Sosa shares his reaction to Cubs 2016 World Series championship

1 month agoTim Stebbins

Every Cubs fan has countless memories of the 2016 season, when the North Siders won their first World Series title since 1908.

An eventful Game 7 in which the Cubs triumphed over Cleveland in extra innings figures to be front of mind for most.

And just like Cubs fans, legendary slugger Sammy Sosa has a vivid memory of the back and forth finale.

“That was something else,” Sosa said in an exclusive interview with Marquee Sports Network’s Cole Wright and Jon “Boog” Sciambi. “I remember that game. [The Cubs] were up, and then there was the home run from [Rajai] Davis. It got close, and then after that … it was like, ‘wow.’”

[Why Sammy Sosa felt now was the time to apologize]

The Cubs jumped out to a 5-1 lead over Cleveland in the 5th inning in Game 7. They led by 3 as late as the bottom of the 8th inning, before Aroldis Chapman surrendered a two-out game-tying homer to Davis. The Cubs rallied following a brief rain delay and went on to win in the 10th inning.

Sosa, the Cubs’ all-time home run leader, reunited with the organization on Friday at Cubs Convention following a 20-year absence.

He came close to leading Chicago to a title in one of his last seasons with the club, in 2003. The Cubs memorably lost the NLCS in seven games that season to the eventual-champion Marlins.

While the ‘03 team fell short, Sosa was happy to see the Cubs reach the top of the mountain 13 years later.

“It was incredible,” Sosa  said. “It could’ve been us in 2003. But they did it and I was very happy about it.”
