Meet ‘The Jaguar’: Cubs prospect Kevin Alcántara’s personality on full display

In 2023, MLB announced Spring Breakout, a 30-team prospect showcase to shine the “springtime spotlight” on every organization’s up-and-coming stars.

The Cubs’ top prospects took on their counterparts in the Los Angeles Angels farm system on March 15, earning a comfortable 8-3 win. One player who was very much enjoying that spotlight in this year’s edition of the showcase was Kevin Alcántara – the Cubs’ No. 6 prospect who they call ‘The Jaguar.’

Alcántara was among one of the game’s top performers, launching a 2-run blast in his first at-bat of the Spring Breakout contest.

In the 8th inning, he put on the headset to talk to Marquee Sports Network’s Cole Wright, Elise Menaker and Lance Brozdowski. At the forefront of Alcántara’s interview was his nickname as the broadcast gave an up-close look at his custom glove adorned in a jaguar print.

“My bat is custom too!” Alcántara said while talking about his home run. “It says ‘Jaguar custom’ on it!”

The 22-year-old outfielder also donned a belt with the same design to go along with his bat and glove. The nickname comes from his childhood in the Dominican Republic, and it has stuck with him in his baseball career because of his speed, power and discipline.

“I have speed and I’m always ready against my prey,” the 6-foot-6 Alcántara said in Spanish in an interview with MLB.com in 2023.

Now with the confidence to do interviews in English, Alcántara talked about that same confidence translating to his game.

“I feel so comfortable – I try to take my confidence out there to the outfield,” he said. “To have a good start in the future you need to have a routine and stay confident.”

Alcántara hit .292 after his call-up to Triple-A Iowa last year, hitting five home runs and posting an .847 OPS in 35 games.

His performances earned him his debut with the Cubs last September, where he notched his first career hit on an infield single. While he’ll begin the 2025 season with Iowa, Alcántara knows his consistent and self-assured playing style means he’ll be back with the Cubs soon.

“I have the ability to play in the big leagues,” he said. “For me, when I have the consistency, I’m the best player in the world.”
