Cubs unveil new uniforms, bringing back a familiar look to team

4 weeks agoAndy Martinez

The Cubs will have a fresh look on the field in 2025.

And it will honor the past.

The team unveiled a new, baby blue alternate uniform dubbed their “Blues Alternate”.

“[The uniform] pays tribute to the team’s history and Chicago’s contribution to the electric blues movement that shaped music worldwide,” the Cubs said in a release.

The Cubs will debut the new look on April 5 against the Padres, their second home game of the year. The City Connect “Wrigleyville” uniforms the team debuted in 2021 will be retired. The Cubs will release a full display of the jersey Friday night, when Cubs Convention kicks off.

It’s the first time the Cubs are wearing the baby blue color scheme since they wore baby blue road jerseys that featured white pinstripes in 1981. They first wore that uniform in 1978. They had worn all baby blue uniforms from 1973 to 1977.

The Cubs were the first team to wear powder blue uniforms. They wore powder blue vests on the road in the 1941 and 1942 seasons.

“The baby blues are back. We’re thrilled to revisit this popular colorway, while also paying tribute to the Blues music that has shaped our city’s cultural landscape,” Cubs Executive Vice President of Marketing and Communications Jennifer Martindale said in a release. “This uniform is more than a celebration of the Cubs past; it’s a nod to an iconic Chicago artform. We hope fans enjoy this unique blend of sports and music history.”

The front of the jerseys feature a big red “C” that spells out Cubs and includes a Chicago Star inside the left part of the letter. The font of the C is “inspired by blues-era instruments.”

The left sleeve features a guitar pick with “CHICAGO” written in it and a red, Chicago star located in the middle. The guitar pick, which is split by an electric bolt, “represents Chicago’s legacy as the birthplace of the electric blues”.

The new uniform combination includes white pants with a blue stripe down the side and a new-look cap. The cap has a blue back and brim, with a white front and the red “Cubs” that appears on the front of the jersey.

Baby blue socks have “Sweet Home Chicago” — referring to the classic blues anthem — emblazoned on them with a six-string guitar stripe.
