MLB Rumors: Cubs add starting pitcher on minor-league deal

4 weeks agoStaff Report

The Cubs have reportedly added to their starting pitching depth.

The team reportedly signed right-handed pitcher Chris Flexen to a minor-league deal with an invitation to major league spring training. The news was first reported by the Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal and Sahadev Sharma, who cited league sources.

Flexen, 30, had a 4.95 ERA in 33 games (30 starts) and had a 1.52 WHIP in 160 innings for the White Sox last season. He has pitched in parts of 7 seasons with the Mets, Mariners, Rockies and White Sox and has a 4.95 career ERA and a 1.49 WHIP in 153 games (110 starts).

His best season came in 2021 when he was 14-6 with a 3.61 ERA and a 1.25 WHIP across 179.2 innings in 31 starts for the Mariners.

Flexen’s addition adds more starting depth for the Cubs. The Cubs opened camp last week with two starting pitchers already injured — Javier Assad is sidelined with a mild left oblique strain and prospect Brandon Birdsell has a grade 1 lat strain that has him shut down for a few weeks.

Jed Hoyer and his front office always preach that a team never has enough pitching. Last season, the Cubs used 11 different starters and eight of those 11 made 7 or more starts. The team is always looking to stockpile arms knowing that injuries can decimate a pitching staff. The team added lefty Matthew Boyd and righty Colin Rea this offseason to their rotation that already included lefties Shota Imanaga and Justin Steele, righty Jameson Taillon and Assad.

Flexen might not be the flashiest signing, but he did post a 1.6 bWAR season with the White Sox and, if called up to make a start, would have some valuable major-league experience. He’ll offer depth with other starting options like young arms Ben Brown, Jordan Wicks, Cade Horton and Caleb Kilian and veteran Cody Poteet.
