Shota Imanaga sings ‘Go Cubs Go’ while playing guitar
Shota Imanaga: a star pitcher AND a musician?! What can’t this guy do!
The Cubs lefty sat down for a video with MLB during spring training where he was asked if he can play the guitar.
“Um, never,” he responded.
If you thought that lack of experience was going to deter Imanaga from picking that guitar up and playing, well, think again.
After singing “Go Cubs Go” with as much confidence as he throws a nasty splitter to strike a hitter out, Imanaga received a round of applause from those in attendance – and of course dropped another hilarious line.
“That was the second that the singer Shota Imanaga was born,” he said through interpreter Edwin Stanberry.
While the Steve Goodman ditty remains popular – it still plays after every win at Wrigley Field – Imanaga has taken the song’s popularity to another level.
From the first second he was introduced to Chicago, he began by reciting lines from the song in English.
And then in November, at the MLB awards show, he led the crowd in an enthusiastic rendition of the anthem while joined on stage by Cubs legend Dexter Fowler:
Imanaga made his Cactus League debut Wednesday, striking out 6 batters and allowing 3 runs in 2.2 innings.
He will start the Cubs’ Opening Day game in Japan in a couple weeks against the Dodgers. The southpaw is coming off a stellar rookie campaign in which he was named to the All-Star team, finished 4th in Rookie of the Year voting and 5th for the National League Cy Young Award.

Since his introductory press conference last January, Imanaga has become a fan favorite amongst Cubs fans due to his sense of humor and vibrant personality that has been on full display.
