Nico Hoerner, Willson Contreras announce their return to Cubs lineup in style
The Cubs got a dose of good news Thursday morning as Willson Contreras and Nico Hoerner returned to the starting lineup.
It was the first time both players were in the Cubs lineup together since May 11. That was the series finale in San Diego when Hoerner accidentally rolled his ankle during a weird play with the umpire in shallow center field.
Hoerner came off the IL Wednesday in Cincinnati, but didn’t start that game. He did pinch-hit in the 9th inning and drove home a run, however.
Contreras also pinch-hit in the 9th inning Wednesday, his first game appearance since leaving in the middle of Saturday’s contest with a minor hamstring issue.
As if to celebrate the moment, both Hoerner and Contreras homered in Thursday’s series finale in Cincinnati.
Hoerner went deep first, turning on a 98 mph fastball from Reds starter Hunter Greene and sending it into the left field bleachers in the 2nd inning.
Contreras followed suit in the 5th inning, blasting one to the upper deck in left for a 441-foot homer. Ian Happ followed that with a dinger of his own as he continues to haunt the nightmares of Reds pitchers.
However, despite the trio of homers, the Cubs wound up dropping Thursday’s contest by a final score of 20-5 in Cincinnati.
