On This Day in 2016: Jason Heyward plays hero in walk-off win over Giants

Five years ago, the Cubs embarked on a historic journey that will go down as one of the most impactful seasons in professional sports.

Throughout 2021, we’re taking a look back at some of the best moments from the incredible 2016 campaign.

Next up: Jason Heyward walks it off against Giants

Jason Heyward did it all.

Trailing 2-1 in the 9th inning against the Giants, Heyward tied the game up at 2 with a single.

His real heroics, though, came four innings later, in the bottom of the 13th inning. Tied at 2 with runners on first and second and 1 out, Heyward hit a bloop single that drove in Anthony Rizzo to give the Cubs a walk-off, 3-2 win.

  • Heyward drove in all 3 runs in the game, he hit a 4th inning single off Johnny Cueto that scored Rizzo to tie the game at 1.
  • The Cubs used 8 pitchers in the game, with Trevor Cahill picking up the win.
  • John Lackey started the game, striking out 6 and allowing 2 runs on 1 hit over 5 innings.
