Owen Caissie wanting to be ‘fly on the wall’ in spring training

The Chicago Cubs top prospect in outfielder Owen Caissie has started to get his footing in Mesa for another spring training. With new veterans in the clubhouse like Kyle Tucker, Caissie is wanting to just be a sponge and absorb as much as he can from the vets.
“Just watch and learn,” Caissie said in an exclusive interview with Cole Wright. “Be kind of like a fly on the wall and just watch what they do day in and day out. Really just take from that.”
Tucker and the current Cubs clubhouse are not the only vets that Caissie is learning from; it’s also the group of Cubs alumni that come in for spring training. Cubs legend Ryne Sandberg has attended over 40 spring training camps since he was 18 years old which provides an opportunity for players like Caissie to learn from the greats before them.
“Just talking to him has been great,” Caissie said. “Just his dedication to the game and to the Chicago Cubs, it’s great being around him and the knowledge he has to share.”

While gaining the insight is important, all eyes are on whether or not Caissie will make a consistent appearance at Wrigley when the regular season comes around. Regardless of whether or not that happens this year, Caissie has a plan.
“[Making it to the big leagues] really doesn’t weigh on me, I’m not going to lie,” Caissie said. “I’ll get there when I get there. I have a plan. Everything’s meant to happen for a reason so it doesn’t really strain on me. Obviously, it drives me a little bit, but I won’t lose sleep over it if I don’t. It’d be cool if I do, but I have a plan. Everything happens for a reason.”
