Patrick Wisdom helps spark Cubs to much-needed sweep of Rockies

8 months agoAndy Martinez

It looked as though some of the Cubs’ offensive issues from earlier in the week were coming back to plague them Sunday afternoon.

They were getting runners on base but couldn’t push across the big hit and were trailing the NL-worst Rockies early.

Then Patrick Wisdom erased any of those doubts. His 2-run home run sparked the Cubs to a 4-3 win over Colorado and a sweep in their final home game of the regular season. The Cubs remain a game up on Miami for the final Wild Card spot and are a half-game behind Arizona for the second spot. The Cubs’ magic number to clinch a playoff berth is 6.

The Cubs raced ahead to a 1-0 lead in the 2nd inning on an RBI double from Yan Gomes. Colorado hit back immediately, Brendan Rodgers’ 2-run home run pushing them ahead. Colorado would tack on another run in the 6th on a Nolan Jones solo homer.

Through the first 5 innings, the Cubs had a baserunner in every frame, including a leadoff runner in 4 of the 5 frames, but could only muster the lone run.

In the 6th, Seiya Suzuki led the inning off with a double and Dansby Swanson had a bloop single to put runners on the corner. Suzuki scored on Gomes’ sac fly and put the Cubs within a run.

Then came Wisdom’s heroics.

The third baseman had just missed a chance to go deep when he hit a 99.4 mph flyout in the 4th inning with a runner on first. In the 6th, he made no mistake, depositing a no-doubt, 111.7 mph home run into the left field bleachers.

Rookie Jordan Wicks turned in another quality start, his third of his career, allowing the runs in 6 innings of work.

Manager David Ross turned to Daniel Palencia (1 inning, 1 strikeout), José Cuas (1 inning, 1 hit, 1 strikeout) and Julian Merryweather to close the door.

The Cubs are off Monday before heading to Atlanta for a 3-game set against the NL-leading Braves.
