CHICAGO – Pete Crow-Armstrong is on an offensive tear unlike anything in his MLB career.

The Cubs center fielder had another huge day at the plate Wednesday night, going 3-for-4 with a three-run home run as the Cubs beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 7-6 and took the season series with a sweep at Wrigley Field.

Crow-Armstrong’s numbers slot him in as one of the best hitters in the league. On the season, he’s slashing .294/.339/.549 (.888 OPS) with five home runs, 17 RBI and 10 stolen bases. His total fWAR for the year is up to 1.5, sixth-best in MLB and just behind fellow Cub Kyle Tucker.

“He had a heck of a game tonight,” Cubs manager Craig Counsell said of his center fielder’s output. “It’s what special players are capable of – impacting all areas of the game. He made his presence felt in a big way.”

“Special” is a word that has received a lot of airtime when it comes to describing the 23-year-old.

“It’s just fun to watch him do his thing and become the star that everybody in Chicago has been waiting for him to do,” Marquee Sports Network’s Cliff Floyd said of Crow-Armstrong on ‘Cubs Live!’ after the game. “It’s really special.”

Even when he’s been streaky at the plate, Crow-Armstrong’s confidence in his teammates to pull out wins hasn’t wavered.

“I was just as confident when my team was putting up 15 runs and I wasn’t feeling as great personally,” he said. “I feel good, and it still seems like my guys feel good around me. That makes it really easy to go up there and hunt your pitch.”

Crow-Armstrong was hitting just .211 with a .549 OPS before the Cubs began their West Coast road trip. Since then, he’s become the Dodgers’ kryptonite, hitting four home runs and collecting nine RBI over their last five meetings. Still, he doesn’t think anything specific has clicked – it’s been more about drowning out the noise.

“I’ve just stayed really true to what I know I do well,” he said. “This month, I’ve been searching for a steady line instead of the ups and downs I’ve experienced a lot. At times I’ve let it get away from me, so I’m being really consistent in my work.”

Crow-Armstrong emphasized striking an internal balance between critique and praise as he blossoms into one of MLB’s newest stars.

“It’s been easier to deal with failure now,” he said. “I think I’ve just found a way to ask a lot of myself, and also give myself a little more grace.”

Crow-Armstrong’s recent hot stretch may have him in the conversation for MVP as the season moves along. Lance Brozdowski broached the subject on the latest Cubs Daily Podcast:
