Cubs outfielder Pete Crow-Armstrong joined Ian Happ on a recent episode of The Compound podcast this week as the young outfielder reflected back on his 2024 season as well as playing at Wrigley Field.
When Crow-Armstrong was called back up in the early part of the 2024 season, there was a bit of pressure on the young outfielder to showcase that he wanted to perform at an elite level and a desire to back up the external pressure he felt.

“It was a weird tango of pairing it with people not giving me the credit I felt like I deserved as a hitter and only making it about the defense,” Crow-Armstrong said. “I don’t care what anybody says about my glove. I know what I can do and that will always be there for me. That’s what’s kept my head above water in my younger days and minor league days. I wanted to prove to everybody that I was both rather than just the glove or just the guy who was fast and steal bases. I wanted to catch the balls I probably should have.”

Crow-Armstrong made strides toward the second half of the season at the plate and wound up finishing his 2024 campaign with a .237/.286/.384.
In his first year up in the majors, he believes the biggest lesson he learned was handling the ebbs and flows of a season.
“It was a pretty big sample size of bad baseball for me, at least to my standards,” he said. “At first, you could probably see it in my face like I was trying to make the fix for that next at-bat and the one after that. When it became, ‘alright, where do you want to see yourself like a month from now?’ You want to still be up here.
“I had to view it differently and approach it differently. What was huge about playing with you [Ian Happ] and started watching you every day, I was able to watch the trajectory of your season…It was easy being able to watch a few of you guys be able to do it well.”
